Name Meanings
The meanings of first names are equivalent to a person's
identity. We identify, many times with who we are as people by the
meanings of our first names. Of course, this shouldn't be the case,
since this has nothing to do with our personhood, but since we are
idiots we do this.
Okay, we are not idiots. This is overstating
things a bit. When people do equate the meanings of first
names with identity, then this behavior is idiocy. Did I phrase
that better?
First names are more important that last
names because they are first. And, first names are certainly
and unequivocally more important than middle
names that are neither first nor last, but sitting idly
by, taking up space in the middle with no real function
other than to be used when our name conflicts with that
of a celebrity.

Oh, no, the Good Lord forbids that our name be mistaken for that
of a celebrity especially when we come to light and make news ourselves.
Remember the confusion over Howard Stern versus Howard K. Stern
(or Howard K. Smith) in the Anna Nicole Smith tragedy?
No, either by middle name or initial, we must no commingle our
names with those of famous people, otherwise the punishment is crushing.
First names are more informal that last names. First names, though
informal are not that informational. For instance, the first name
Bob does not carry as much genealogical information as does the
name Smith. In other words, first names meanings are somewhat meaningless.
One exception is that Howard may have some meaning since this can
be a first name or a leeward one. First names are preferred since
they are first to the finish line when saying one's name. Last implies
loser, so should be avoided except in formal situation that call
for using the winning and losing names together.
First names may be either proper, short, nicknames,
pet names or derogatory names. See how flexible they are! The much
more informal first name is a joy to deal with as opposed to the
other names.
First names make you feel like you're a first class citizen. If
people call you by your first name as in being on a first name basis,
this puts you and them at ease. First names are fun. Don't you just
like calling someone "Smoochie", "Lucy" or even
"Sushi"? I do. It gives a person added meaning when you
do this.
It is much more fun to call someone these names than it is to call
them something like Mr. Anderson, Mr. Cranston, or Miss Cellaneous.
First names give that personal touch that is missing in so much
of our lives. So, why not call the President, the Pope or the Dalai
Lama by their first names today? You'll be glad you did.
